Unfortunately, the Movie "Arbitrage" (a true paradox) will Win an Oscar For Best Film Score !

Arbitrage, a true paradox, unfortunately, will win an Oscar for best film score .
I say "unfortunate", because it's the music should be getting the main credit (Oscar) and the movie should get the " best film to support the music" award.  To award Arbitrage with a best film Oscar, would be the classic tale of "the tail wagging the dog".

Let me explain why Arbitrage is really a publicity stunt, whose intent was to introduce a new artist to North American audiences.

Firstly,I should  give a short synopsis of Arbitrage, for those who have not yet seen it.

Arbitrage stars Richard Gere who plays the calm, cool, and collected, billionaire a stock market magnate Robert Miller. On the surface Miller is the epitome of self-confidence & success. However, on the inside, he's stuck in the middle of a do-or-die financial crisis. This crisis is exacerbated by a personal tribulation involving his young French mistress. Can Miller save his financial empire and legacy, or will he get the kind of publicity that will destroy him and the people who depend on him?

Just like the definition of "arbitrage" (the simultaneous buying and selling of securities, currency, or commodities in different markets or in derivative forms in order to take advantage of differing prices for the same ace)  Robert Miller, is both hero & villain in this drama.

What caught my attention was the similarity between this story and the Bernie Madoff scandal in the financial crash of 2008.

On the other hand however, the differences far outweigh the similarities between the two. Madoff is unrepentant and openly cares for no one. Richard Geres' character, onto either hand is basically good man good man, who has become corrupt and starts to take liberties." He get's his business into trouble, but is truly concerned about protecting those who have come to depend on him for so many things.

Nicholas Jarecki, the writer & director of Arbitrage, says that Robert Miller "was emotionally exploiting the people in his life because he knew best and (was) really 'The Man.' But how much of our lives do we really control? I think a lot of what happens to us is luck."

There's that theme of opposites again. Is it control, or luck that determines the outcome?

"One of my proudest moments was a few weeks ago right before we opened, at a screening in the East Hamptons in New York. It's one of the wealthiest places on the planet," Jarecki recalled. "In the theatre there were several hedge fund managers there, several who had inspired the film. The collective personal net worth of the people watching the film was maybe $20 billion."
Jarecki said that after watching the film many of these hedge fund manager spoke to him saying, 'What you've done is sort of captured our personal nightmare. This is what we all worry about.'

This film certainly confirms my own suspicions of those people who ask us to trust them with our hard earned money, so they can  "invest" it  and make us  "grow" rich while we are asleep (at the wheel).

Now to the heart of the matter.
Usually the music backs up the story in the film, but in this cassette film has backed up the music.

Yes the movie was good, but the music really dominates everything. There was bossa nova, electronic, even a tastey track played by Toronto jazz pianist Robi Botos.

As a jazz pianist I'm always attracted to interesting music, and  as a songwriter, I'm always ready to learn from unusual artists.

Most of the music featured in Arbitrage really did underscore the story. However, the crowning piece of music, the movies' raison d'être, the song "I See Who You Are", was an entity unto itself.
To me, the whole movie was used to set up the entrance of t "I See Who You Are" .

It stood out like a red flag in front of a bull. It completely arrested your full attention. It was performed by Björk,a singer from Iceland, whose punkish singing style is as unique as is her name.

I've never heard of Björk before. It seems as if the whole movie was aimed at introducing Björk & her song to North American audiences. According to my research, she has a considerable cult following in Europe. She's been around for almost 50 years. I listened to other recordings by Björk on Youtube, and found them equally fresh & innovative.

This song is definitely on the list of paradoxes that run throughout the entire theme of Arbitrage. Hero/villain? Buying/selling? …Filmscore/scorefilm?

What a classy choice of songs! It confirms that Richard Geres' character really is a hero and not the villain that he could have been so easily painted as,if it were not for "control" being influenced by "luck".

But, wait!
Our Ying & Yang theme doesn't end here.
Looking at the lyrics of "I See Who You Are", Björk seduces us with the words… 'Let me push you up against me tightly'.
How can you push, when you really have to pull?

The conflict of opposites that are rife throughout Arbitrage is maintained right through to the very end of the movie.

I do highly recommend that you go & see Arbitrage.
It's absolutely brilliant!

Björk first came to prominence as one of the lead vocalists of the avant pop Icelandic sextet the Sugarcubes, but when she launched a solo career after the group's 1992 demise, she quickly eclipsed her old band's popularity. Instead of following in the Sugarcubes' arty guitar rock pretensions, Björk immersed herself in dance and club culture, working with many of the biggest names in the genre, including Nellee Hooper, Underworld, and Tricky. Debut, her first solo effort (except for an Icelandic-only smash released when she was just 11 years old), not only established her new artistic direction, but it became an international hit, making her one of the '90s most unlikely stars.

The MV Woodman
The Woodman Story
This is the boat we'll be sailing on, The MV Woodman.

It all started from Ed and Betty Penny entertaining friends on their small houseboat for many years and not knowing the history of the massive Lake Scugog that flowed into The Trent Severn Waterway System.

Their small houseboat had room for six people comfortably, which cruised on Lake Scugog for 10 years.
It was when Paul Arculus a local historian and author wrote a book about Steamship history in Scugog and the trade that existed in the community many years  before road transportation existed. With their love of history, this sparked the Penny's attention to revive some of this lost information to visitors as it was such a lovely town that had a lot of waterfront history.

Ed and Betty started looking at commercial tour boats to see if they could revive some of the fun and history that existed in Lake Scugog in the 1800's with boat party excursions with the steamers.

   Original Crew of Woodman
The original Woodman was a wooden steamship that had its maiden voyage in 1851 and operated by George Crandell, it  was a successful operation during it's time. A picture of the steamship is shown below with the original crew members. There were many steamships that operated on Lake Scugog. When Ed and Betty decided to build the Woodman, they reclaimed the name to revive the lost Lake history. At one time Lake Scugog was bustling with commercial Lake trade with over 26 steamships, delivering logs and goods to Port Perry Railway through the Trent Severn Waterway.

Buying a Woodman version (A small Tour Boat)
The original idea to revive Lake tourism started in 2002 with the purchase a small pontoon 14 passenger boat.  When it was inspected by Transport Canada, they found it could not be certified  to legally carry passengers, it did have a history of operating for several years on the Grand Bend River doing tours that were not legal. When the Penny's inquired about  the cost to retrofit to Transport Canada Standards it was considered was too costly, but the idea was too good to let go. The pontoons were sold and the idea of launching the 100 passenger vessel to bring back history on Lake Scugog was started.

Building of the Woodman  (100 Passenger Ship)

Lower Deck
Ed and Betty  sat down with Bob Johnson to come up with a design that would be innovative, profitable and attractive to Lake Scugog.
A floating dance hall, where passengers could enjoy the sights and beauty of shorelines of Lake Scugog.  They wanted to showcase history with a commercial ship that the Lake had not experienced in since the early 1900's, as all crafts that ventured on Lake Scugog were pleasure boats only. The new Woodman II employed skilled tradesmen from Newfoundland and all around Canada to build the ship. A lot of hard work and passion was invested from the local tradesmen who worked day and night to get the vessel built. It was exciting for them to develop an idea from paper to create a vision that came to life, where people locally and from around the world could have a cruise experience again on Lake Scugog..

Dream Harbour has become a surprising turning point in my career. It’s not because I've sold a million copies, or finally become a big music star. Rather, it’s because I've  discovered a whole new market that is literally searching for the type of music. READ MORE

A Big Problem !
Last  year I was contacted by a father & son team who were in the amusement business together. They told me that there was an annual banquet that people in the amusement  business usually attended, however, this year the  banquet was cancelled, which also meant  that the valuable opportunity to network, and renew contacts with old friends  as well as  making new friends, was lost.

Comes a Brainwave!
These businessmen didn't let this bother them one bit. They did what any experienced  entrepreneurs would do... they seized the opportunity to make lemonade, out of lemons.
They did something absolutely a brilliant. They knew that the annual trade show for people in the the amusement  business was coming up in a few months, so they thought, "Why not take advantage of a captive audience and invite all of the trade show visitors to a hospitality suite, that they would host, right in the same venue that was housing the trade show.

Is all the Effort Worth While ?
Not having any previous experience with hospitality suites they were not quite sure if it would be a good return on their investment.
They went ahead regardless, and rented a suite in the hotel where the trade show was being held. They hired an outside caterer to supply the food, refreshments, wait staff & bar tender. To their credit they contracted me to supply the music for the evening's entertainment.

How Did the Evening Go?
People started drifting in about 5 o'clock in the evening. The delicious food being served by smartly dressed servers, the bar tender pouring exotic cocktails, wine & beer, my piano quietly humming cool  jazz standards  in the background -all of these things- created a very cosy room, that made guests feel at home, and encouraged a lot of conversation, which  made the often daunting task of networking, very enjoyable indeed. People didn't necessarily talk about the amusement business. It was really a time to connect & reconnect on a personal level.
As the evening progressed, people came & went, so the room was always full.
Some people came directly from the trade show, others had dinner first & dropped in later. About 3 hours into the evening I noticed that the mood of the room had gradually changed from polite & cordial to that of a genuine "party" . Not that there was yelling & screaming and poor behaviour, but rather that there was a real element of joy and friendliness in the room , much the same as if it were in your own home, where everyone was having a good time. The decibel level had certainly increased, which is a sign that more people were talking.

What's Different ?
Whenever I'm entertaining, I always keenly aware of the general mood of the room, and when I sense the change in mood, I automatically change the mood of the music I'm  playing. It was time to take the music up a notch, so I  stopped playing background instrumentals & started signing some well known pop songs  that would fit the age bracket of the various guests in attendance. I  wasn't loud, but people did notice the change, and judging by their smiles & comment , they loved it. It was something they were not expecting. The mood had changed, & I know that  the music has to support the mood.

How Do They Get The Bull to Stand Still?
During one of my breaks,I was chatting with one of the guests  who was on the organizing committee for  a fall fair in the Brampton area. Their big attraction was the livestock exhibit of horses and cows. Did you know that in today's hi tech bovine culture, that all cows are artificially inseminated? Neither did I. It's all done by machine. Immediately I think of passing this valuable information along to the professional comics I know. They would have a real ( pardon the expression)  "ball" with this information. Think of the questions they would ask their audiences.

"How do they get the bull to stand still?
" What does the machine look like?
" What is the title of the person who does this kind of work"
" Are there pictures/videos involved?"
" What is the job description you'd place in the help wanted ads?"
" Do have to wait until cows are asleep?"

As for the horses, I'm told that they are the only ones still doing it old school. "Why", I asked my new friend. He didn't know why, but suggested I might find the answer on the internet. I haven't gotten around to it yet, but if I ever decide to visit the Brampton Fall Fair, I'll ask someone.

When I am successful...You are successful!
Q.Was the expense of hosting a hospitality suite worth it ?"
Q.Was the time spent organizing the hospitality suite worth the bother?
Q. Did these entrepreneurs achieve what they set out to do ?

A.A.A
When I left the hospitality suite at 10 o'clock, after having played for five straight hours, the room was still busy, and their parting words were, "Same time next year "!

    Tips for Organizing Your Own
              Hospitality Suite

Hospitality suites  are  an extension of the activity you've already done earlier down on the trade show floor. Ideally, the function of an effective hospitality suite is to provide you/company an opportunity to spend more quality time with important  prospects/customers in a private environment,  far away your spying competitors. Hospitality suites can create more business and, leave a good impression with your target audience as well.

1. Get a list of the email addresses for the trade show or conference attendees. Send them a press release telling them about your hospitality event 4 weeks   ahead. Send another release one week before.

2. Get a venue that is in the same building as the actual trade show or conference

3.  Make sure that there is a closed off area for food preparation and storage. If you're using hotel, get a suite, that has a couple of bedrooms and a separate living room area.

4. If there's any distractions in your hospitality suite like tv's, video games, toys of any sort, etc. make  sure they're unplugged if not removed.

5. Get a creative caterer

6. Ensure your bartender is fully aware of his responsibilities as far as the serving of alcohol to guests who have had their share

7. If you are using your own company staff to host your hospitality suite, (opposed to employing professional hosts) here' s how you get them ready.

8.If you're using your own employees as hosts, instead of professional hosts, make sure that you choose employees who are are enthusiastic, and enjoy socializing. Brief them about the purpose of the hospitality suite, and let them know what you expect of them.

I highly recommend a dress code, keeping in mind that even though your guests may arrive dressed casually, your company is still in business mode.

Employees should be encouraged to:
•practice a confident handshake
• memorize  a brief self-introduction, that includes their name and what they do at the company
• have a series of "small talk" subjects in case the conversation runs dry.

  "What about those Leafs...eh ?"

9. Invite me to supply a great evening of music, song and entertainment

Planning Your Perfect Wedding...
is the name of a book that has just been published by Cornerstone Publications. In fact they interviewed me to get information about what things a bride should look for when considering whether to use live music or a Dj service.

Here's my interview with Cornerstone

What should a couple consider when choosing between a live band and a DJ?
Scientific research has proven that LIVE MUSIC is the leading cause of these
TOP 10 TRAGIC RESULTS !

1. It makes your guests so happy they DANCE like no one's watching
2. The singer performs such a moving rendition of your wedding song that
everyone is moved to TEARS
3. A PROFESSIONAL entertainer interacts with your guests all night
4. As a result of # 3 above, your guests who may have been former
strangers are now FRIENDS
5. Your guests & family will shower you with COMPLIMENTS like" such a
beautiful wedding day!"
6. Man! That Jazz trio playing at the reception makes you look way to COOL
7.The beautiful piano music floating through the air during dinner is so
calming & RELAXING
8.Because of #7 above your HAPPY guests easily engage in
conversation....ouch, that's a bad one
9. The visual of entertainers dressed in tuxes, the stage lights, P.A.
system, music equipment, etc.
tells everyone that your wedding is indeed a very SPECIAL occasion
10. The band leader will act as MC, so you can relax, STRESS-FREE, & enjoy
your own wedding

With live bands, does a couple have the ability to request specific songs?
Not only can you request specific songs, if you can't seem to find just
the right song,I  can compose a custom-made song for you. How cool is that?

How far in advance should the couple notify the band of specific song requests?

If your songs are unusual/obsucure , it's better inform the band leader
when you sign the contract for his/her services ,so that they can get
right on it. This always avoids disappointment for the wedding couple.

Do live bands generally take breaks throughout the event?  If so, how many?
Playing music is as physical as any aerobic exercise you do at the gym.
Musicians need to be refreshed at least 10 minutes out of every hour & fed
at some time during the wedding, because chances are they most likely didn't

their lunches or dinners with them.

What is the typical price range for a live band?
Here, size does matter.
The bigger the band, the the bigger the fee.
Many brides use a pianist who can also sing.
Often musicians like myself can mix  & match the band size, according to
the function.
Eg. A pianist plays for ceremony & adds a bass & drummer for
reception/dinner , then a guitar & bass player are added for the dance.
So what you have is a sliding scale that allows the wedding couple to get
a real bang for their entertainment dollar.

What are some factors that generally determine the cost of hiring a live band?

There are several things that will effect your budget

The size of the venue (large parties need large bands)
Does the band have to travel a greta distance
Length of time music is needed ( time is money)
Time of year (Xmas season is expensive)

You usually get what you pay for !

What should a couple consider when deciding which band to hire?

The professional experience of the musicians (pro's charge for their experience )
The quality of musicianship (beginners always charge less, because they are trying to get known)
Service in helping you prepare your wedding music

- the best bands always do this free as part of their client service
Do you get a sense that the band is reliable?
Do you get extras such as:
- free DJ service while band is taking  a break
- will leader act a MC
- referrals
- check out their YOUTUBE videos etc.
- visit their website to get a feel of how professional they are

How far in advance should a couple book a specific date with a live band?
As soon as you book your venue, you'd best start looking at the music provider, if you want to avoid disappointment

What is the customary deposit that a couple normally places with the band?
Most bands ask for 10% non-refundable deposit

If an event needs to be re-scheduled or is cancelled, what is the latest
that a couple should notify the band, in order to get their deposit back?

See response  above

Are there ways to see or hear a band before making a decision to hire them?
- go to their YOUTUBE videos
- visit their website
- if allowed ,visit a live performance
- ask for referrals

Can a couple usually decide how large the band will be?
A discussion with the band leader will help the couple decide on the best format
I've often performed as a  one-man-band, in place of a trio or quartet.
My 25 years plus, of experience as a pro has given me the skill to do this, but,
not all pianists/vocalists have this talent

What are some other factors that should go into a decision about hiring a band?

A personal meeting with a band leader will always give you a lot of information, you would

not otherwise have gotten nor asked for.
Musicians like myself have a many contacts in the entertainment & event planning industry
For example, I recently hired to perform at an event with my trio.
The organizer also needed a comedian but  had absolutely no idea of where to find one.
Because of my contacts, I was able to secure a very well know comedian for the event as well.
